Online Host: Copyright 1997 America Online, Inc. All Rights Reserved MUCH MC: Tonight at 9 pm EST Sarah will perform LIVE on new music from her upcoming release "Surfacing" , and take questions about it, as well as Lilith Fair. MUCH MC: Sarah McLachlan is here! MUCH MC: One sec - let me just get her on stage MUCH MC: Sarah - thanks for joining us tonight! We're all so excited! Ready to begin? MUCH Sarah: Yes MUCH MC: Great, our first question... Question: How do you feel about having some of your songs such as "Possession" changed into techno remixes, have you heard them and do you like them? MUCH Sarah: I think it's great fun to have somebody reinterpret my songs Question: Dear Sarah, Do you feel that your 'surfacing' is a realization of your passion and sexuality as a female. I mean you were 'Touched', found 'Solace', then 'Fumbled Towards Ecstasy', now what are you 'Surfacing' from? MUCH MC: Heavy! MUCH Sarah: I don't think it has anything to do particularly with that. Question: Was there anyone that you tried to get for Lilith Fair who said no? MUCH Sarah: A few people - mostly because they were either in the studio or they were tired from too much touring: Tori Amos, Bjork, Garbage the list goes on, but, we did get about 90% of all the gals we invited Question: Hi Sarah how's the electric guitar playing coming? And I love your smile! MUCH Sarah: Guitar playing is coming along fine, thank you. Question: Sarah: You did a lot of work with World Vision. How do you feel now that Canada is... bringing Pol Pac (sp?) to trial? Fabulous?!? MUCH Sarah: AS LONG as he gets brought to justice, and is given an appropriate sentence for all the atrocious acts he has committed. Question: Hi Sarah , I love the new single! Can you tell us your inspiration for Building a Mystery? MUCH Sarah: It's about walls, it's about the walls we build up to protect ourselves, and trying to create a facade that we think is more interesting than who we really are. And hiding those insecurities. Question: Since the basic premise of the Lilith Fair tour is a celebration of women in music, would you possibly be willing to cut an album based on that idea? Perhaps incorporating not only artists on the tour, but other names, like Tori Amos? MUCH Sarah: We are working on that very idea as we speak. Keep you posted. Question: Hi Sarah - are you comfortable with your "new" look?? You always look great to me!!! ;) No Answer Question: How can we expect "Surfacing" to be different from "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" and your other albums? MUCH Sarah: What the hell is that supposed to mean? MUCH Sarah: :) MUCH Sarah: It's a long the same lines except more personal. Question: Is it true that you took some time off between albums because you were happy and found it harder to write songs, being really happy in your life? MUCH Sarah: It's true I took some time off to reclaim my life that I felt like I had lost from being on the road for over 2 and a half years. Question: Sarah, you are a beautiful, talented woman with an incredible voice, and I will be seeing you at Lilith Fair. Did you study voice? Or are you naturally perfect??? :-) MUCH Sarah: Yes I did study voice, but I don't think it helped me that much until I met a great teacher in Vancouver named Judith Rabinovitch. MUCH MC: Great questions coming! ;) Question: Dear Sarah, What would your advice be to an up and coming male musician who really wants to succeed in the business MUCH Sarah: How the hell would I know? I'm a woman. No really, I think advice that I would give to any musician regardless of sex would be to trust yourself and be true to yourself. MUCH MC: Q: How do you feel about your songs (lyrically) having such an effect on people in love? MUCH Sarah: I'm very happy to be affecting people in love in a positive way. Question: Sarah, how did you overcome your writer's block? MUCH Sarah: I waited and I tried to trust in myself that it would come when it was ready to come. Patience is golden Question: Not that you really get a chance to do it much, but how do you like to relax in your down time? MUCH Sarah: Garden, play with my dog, garden some more, walk in the woods with my dog and my husband Ashwin. Question: How are things in married life? MUCH Sarah: Great, couldn't be better. Question: I was wondering if you have any "lucky charms" that you bring along with your at your concerts? MUCH Sarah: My dog. Question: Sarah... did you try to get Ani Difranco on the Lilith Fair tour??? Do you like her music??? MUCH Sarah: Yes, I did. But, I think she got scared away by the corporate sponsorship. She's very anti-corporate which is too bad because most of the reason that we got sponsors involved was to get them to donate money to charity. Question: Will Lilith Fair become an annual thing? MUCH MC: Sarah's thinking... ;) Great questions everyone! Keep it up! This is the greatest! MUCH Sarah: Yes, we are looking to do a three to five year thing and we'll be including men one of these years. It's about the music first and foremost. But this year we had to make a little bit of a point. Question: I know that a lot of your followers are into things like Wicca & "alternative" spiritual beliefs. Are you a practitioner of anything like that, & if so, how does it impact you & your music? MUCH Sarah: No I'm not really personally into those sort of things, but then again I don't know much about it. Question: What inspired the song "Ice Cream?" I love that song. And it has a certain double meaning that not many people know!!! MUCH Sarah: Do tell. The fear of commitment inspired the song. Question: Sarah... what artists are you listening to at this time? MUCH Sarah: None. Get me on to the tour, so I can hear some music. MUCH MC: Sooo many great question's! Question: When did you start planning the Lilith Fair? And what gave you the idea to do such a great thing? MUCH MC: Lilith seems to be a popular topic tonite! MUCH Sarah: 2 years ago when I wanted to try and create a forum for women and music to get together, and create a sense of community that doesn't exist now. Question: Which song do you have the most personal attachment to? Is there one you feel relation to your life the most? NO ANSWER. Question: Sarah, I love "Gloomy Sunday" but I wonder why you chose to cover that particular song out of the entire Holliday catalogue? MUCH Sarah: Because it's beautifully depressing, and I love singing it. Question: When did you first start singing? MUCH Sarah: Earliest memory is when I was 4 years old. Question: Who is your favorite Poet? Mine is E. E. Cummings. MUCH Sarah: That's a hard one... WW1 poet named... Dolce Et Dorcorum est propatri mori ( spelling?) Wilfred Owens MUCH MC: Another question about Lilith Fair.... Question: I would just like to commend you for this concert... it truly is incredible and you should be very proud.... I would like to know if you plan on putting together some sort of a compilation CD of the Lilith Fair artists? MUCH Sarah: Yes we are working on that. Question: I would like to hear more about your work with Delerium and Rabbit. Do you send them masters and let them remix your music with their own flair or do you go into the studio with them? MUCH Sarah: They do it on their own (the remixing). Question: After going through the whole building process of putting a song together, do you ever listen to your album driving around in your car and all of the sudden a song will emotionally catch you by surprise? MUCH MC: That's a neat one.... MUCH Sarah: Usually by surprise onstage when I'm singing it. Question: When writing, do the words to the song come out pretty much on the first try or does it take some re-writing? MUCH Sarah: God, it's trauma to write lyrics (most times) but occasionally they come out really easily (angel.) Question: What would you be doing if you weren't making music? MUCH Sarah: Making babies. MUCH MC: This may be the LAST question folks.... ;( Question: What makes you write a song? Is it past experiences or do the words and feelings just hit you like a brick? MUCH Sarah: A bit of both. MUCH MC: And that's the last one. Thanks so much for joining us Sarah! Have a great show! MUCH Sarah: Bye bye, thank you for your good questions. MUCH MC: Thanks to everyone for being here - take care! Go out & get "Surfacing" when it hits shelves in July. MUCH MC: The new CD (Surfacing) is an enhanced CD, and is going to be bundled with AOL software!!! So get your friends plugged into AOL - keyword: MUCHMUSIC! ;) MUCH MC: Goodnight everyone! MUCH MC: This has been a MUCHMUSIC AOL production Online Host: Copyright 1997 America Online, Inc. All Rights Reserved ======================== More about this Event: 06/25 Recording Artist Sarah McLachlan (AOL Live) Poet, musician, classically-trained vocalist and one of her generation's foremost adventurers on the emotional landscape, McLachlan will chat LIVE with fans via phone, fax, the Internet and AOL in this Much Exclusive experience -- Intimate & Interactive with Sarah McLachlan -- June 25th. McLachlan was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1968 and has been on a musical path ever since. Following years spent studying classical piano, guitar and voice, she was discovered fronting a New Wave band in 1985 by the then-fledgling Nettwerk Records out of Vancouver. In spite of the fact that she had never written a song of her own, the label signed her, and the rest -- "Touch" (1988), "Solace" (1991), "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy" (1994), and now, "Surfacing" (July 1997) -- is definitely musical history. Says Sarah of "Surfacing": "It's about me finally growing up and facing ugly things about myself. We all have a dark side; it's ******** to say that we don't. At some point we're going to have to face that." Sarah also headlines this summer's Lilith Fair. Event Keyword: "MuchMusic"
